THE CALS

The Billy Mitchell Scottish Pipe Band is named in honor of Brigadier General William L. Mitchell, the driving force behind the creation of the United States Air Force. After the rudimentary use of aircraft in World War I, BG Mitchell proved that aircraft could sink a battleship, then considered the world’s most formidable weapon. BG Mitchell, the grandson of a successful Scottish immigrant, was born in the Milwaukee suburb of West Allis and spent his childhood in the Milwaukee area. Milwaukee’s airport is named after him. The airport features the Mitchell Gallery of Flight museum, and a World War II B-25 medium bomber is mounted on a pedestal at the airport’s entrance.

The Band wears the Ancient Mitchell tartan.

We can provide a full band, small group, or soloists for almost any occasion. The Band can come to your concert, folk festival, parade, corporate conference or dinner, wedding or private party, or events as diverse as professional sports, golf outings, veterans’ memorials, honoring of dignitaries (including two US Presidents), monument dedications, balloon risings, car shows, or welcoming visiting foreign warships. Enjoying a special relationship with the Presbyterian-founded Carroll University, the Band has played at every commencement since 1971. We have performed or competed in the mid-west, Canada, Scotland and Japan, and have appeared with the Red Hot Chili Pipers, Rod Stewart, Andre Rieu’s Johann Strauss Orchestra, Carlos Nunez, Navan, and the High Kings. The band often plays for the Caledonian Scottish Dancers, and with long links to the St Andrew’s Society of Milwaukee, is proud to represent Milwaukee’s Scottish community.

If you are a piper or drummer interested in joining us, we want to hear from you. Note that we supply uniforms and what you need to play with us. If you want to learn to play pipes or drums, push the button below.

Are you?

We often appear with the Caledonian Scottish Dancers (“the Cals”). This troop of champion dancers offers a wide variety of traditional and contemporary Highland and national dances that make a visually stunning counter-part to the Band. At your option, the Cals can bring excitement and fun to your event by leading your participants in easy to do ceilidh (party) dances. The Cals have competed and danced in the mid-west, Canada, and Japan, and have made four performing tours of Scotland, including the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo’s Fringe Festival.
